Moving Countdown Checklist

8 Weeks Before
Moving Day
    
            
  • Contact your local Vanpac Agent to provide you with an estimate. You will find him in the Yellow Pages under "Movers".

  • If your move is due to employer relocation, complete the necessary forms.

  • Sketch out your floor plan of your new home to determine what to take and what to dispose. Your floor plan will help you coordinate your move more effectively.

  • Have a family meeting to discuss the move with your children. The more informed everyone is of the move, the easier the move will be.


 

4-6 Weeks Before
Moving Day
    
            
  • Notify your children's schools, your church, clubs and any other organizations to which you belong of your impending move.

  • Notify magazines and book and record clubs of your new address.

  • File a mail forwarding form with the Post Office.

  • Gather all of your family's medical and dental records. Ask your physicians for colleague recommendations in your new city.

  • Transfer contents of safety deposit box.

  • Complete a home inventory. Compile a detailed list of your possessions and, if possible, list date purchased and value.

  • Notify your local utilities to have your service turned off after your departure. Contact utilities in your new city for connections.

  • Contact pharmacies for copies of your prescriptions.


 

2-3 Weeks Before
Moving Day
    
            
  • Begin any packing you are doing yourself.

  • Make arrangement for servicing of your appliances both at your current home and you new home. Vanpac Agents can help you locate service companies at your destination if necessary.

  • Plan your trip to your new destination. Contact travel club for route maps. Make travel accommodations. Have your car serviced.

  • Make arrangements to move your plants and pets.

  • Notify your Vanpac Agent if you changed anything about your move: household goods, destination, dates of the move, etc.

  • Dispose of anything that is flammable or could possibly leak.

  • If you're shipping an automobile:

  • Plan to have the gasoline tank less than 1/2 full.
  • Make sure there is sufficient antifreez in the cooling system
  • Make sure there is also sufficient oil so the engine will not be damaged when started.
  • Do some nice thing for you and your family:

  • Visit special people and places that hold fond memories.
  • Have a going away party.

 

The Weeks Before
Moving Day
    
            
  • Determine what items you're taking with you on the move. Make sure all laundry is complete before the appliance service man is expected. Begin packing.

  • Have rugs and draperies cleaned, keep in protective cleaner bags.

  • Make sure all items that are traveling with you are clearly labeled.

  • Drain the fuel from lawn-mowers and other power equipment.

  • Use up your frozen food supply . . . or give to a neighbor.

  • Stop delivery services such as newspaper, laundry, dry cleaning, water softening and trash pick-up.

  • Pack a box of things you'll need as soon as you arrive at your new home. This might include "non-aerosol" cleaning items, disposable plates and cups, light tools, snacks, bathroom items and trash bags. You can either take these items with you or have the Vanpac driver load them last and unload first.

  • Take your last complete inventory of the items you're having moved.


 

The Day Before
Moving Day
    
            
  • This is usually the day packing is done. Make sure all packing services have been performed before you sign for them.

  • Organize the things you'd like to have kept together in your new home.

  • Confirm the moving van's arrival time with your Vanpac origin Agent.


 

Moving Day
    
            
  • Make sure your family gets a good breakfast

  • Plan to be at home when your Vanpac driver arrives, and stay there throughout the loading process. If you won't be there, make sure someone will be there to direct the movers. And make sure the driver has in writing the name and phone number of that person.

  • Accompany the driver on a tour of your home to examine the goods that will be moved.

  • Check the condition of the goods as they are loaded.

  • Make a final tour of your home before the Vanpac driver leaves. Check to see that nothing has been over looked.

  • If you'd like Vanpac to do unpacking at you home, make arrangements with the driver or your Vanpac agent.

  • Make sure your new address and phone number are correct on the bill of lading.

  • Check to make sure that all doors and windows are locked and all switches off.

  • Leave your new address in the house so your real estate agent or the new owners of your home can forward your mail.

  • Now you can concentrate on getting yourself to your new home. Your Vanpac driver will deliver your belongings with expert care.
